Matera’s on Park is a cozy deli located on the corner of Park Ave and Franklin Pl in Rutherford, NJ. It’s a local known spot, and as a proud local myself, I couldn’t wait to share this gem with you! Matera’s serves up some of the best sandwiches, breads, and Italian dishes I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff is always friendly. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, picking up takeout, or ordering catering for a special event, Matera’s is a great go to spot for a delicious Italian meal.
The Ambiance
As soon as you step inside, you’re hit with the irresistible scent of Italian food. The deli features an array of stuffed breads and antipasto such as salads, Italian long hots and bruschetta behind glass, creating an authentic Italian market vibe. The space itself is cozy and welcoming, making it the perfect place for a quick lunch or a relaxed meal. It feels homey – comforting, familiar, and filled with all the flavors that make Italian cuisine so special and addicting.
The Menu
Matera’s offers a wide range of classic Italian options, from the antipasto I just mentioned to cold cuts by the pound and mouthwatering sandwiches, bowls, and dinner entrees. The standout items on their menu are the Matera’s favorites, and trust me, they don’t disappoint! My personal go-to is the H7 (chicken vodka parm – I’m a sucker for a good vodka sauce), followed by the triple chicken parm. My boyfriend, on the other hand, always opts for the Belleville Classic. If you’re in the mood for something hearty, they have everything from eggplant parm to spaghetti and meatballs, and don’t forget the pepperoni-stuffed bread – it’s my favorite one and an Italian food lover’s dream come true.
What I Tried
I decided to switch it up from my usual and get the triple chicken parm for the first time, and let me tell you – it’s AMAZING. The chicken cutlet is thin and perfectly crispy. They top it with melted mozzarella and layer on vodka, tomato, and pesto sauces. It’s a bit indulgent, but quite delicious!
The combination of the creamy vodka sauce, tangy tomato sauce, and fresh, herby pesto all complement the chicken so well. My boyfriend got the Belleville Classic – a deli classic with ham, salami, provolone (we get mozz always), lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar. It tastes like nostalgia in a sandwich. And the pepperoni-stuffed bread – a little greasy in the best way, it totally gives me those grandma’s kitchen vibes.
Service and Staff
Matera’s has a counter-service style, so you order at the counter, and they’ll bring your food to you. The staff is incredibly sweet and always willing to customize your sandwich to make it exactly how you like it. It’s clear they take pride in their food here!
Overall
If you’re looking for a laid-back spot with no fuss and seriously great food, Matera’s on Park should be at the forefront of your list. The food here is clearly made with love. And for all my vodka sauce lovers out there (the best sauce, obviously) – this place is a MUST-TRY. The triple chicken parm has made it into my top 10 sandwiches, and trust me, I’ve had my fair share of sandwiches!
